It has been popular to store apple juice in glass bottles and jars, particularly in Estonia people were using 3-liter jars. This involves washing, heating, and canning them. Bottles and jars take up a lot of space, are heavy, and can easily break. Once the bottle or jar is opened, the juice should be consumed within a few days so that it does not ferment. When the juice has been consumed the bottles and jars should be washed and stored again until the autumn. As there are fewer jars circulating, it is harder to find new ones.
This problem is solved by the Bag-in-Box system. The outer carton box is protected for a plastic juice bag inside of it. For consuming the juice, there is a tap at the bottom of the bag. The bag squeezes in by vacuum when the juice is being consumed through the tap. The oxygen can not reach the juice through the sealed tap and double-layered bag. Once you open the tap, the juice remains fresh for about 2 to 3 months, which is significantly longer than in the jar.
